Uh, BOO!

Won't somebody please think of the pies!?

I can't wait for Halloween to be over so we can get on with the rest of my favorite season. November and December are probably my favorite months of the year. I guess it's the Thanksgiving and Christmas thing. I imagine that this hapless gourd could have made a decent handful of pies or other tasty desserts. See, that's what pumpkins should really be used for!

The logo carved into the pumpkin belongs to a video production company, Atomic Productions where I do occasional voice-over work. One of their employees brought it in for the amusement of coworkers and visitors. I used Photoshop to remove it from its original background, and simulated the light inside.

This is for Project52-2012 week 45: Halloween.

Eat Your Heart Out, Las Vegas!

Our friends in China really love to light up their buildings.

We made our way across Shanghai after our last dinner before flying back to Beijing and then home the next morning. I had been impressed throughout our trip with the sheer amount of neon, LED and other lighting on both public and private buildings at night. Large Chinese cities are a colorful sight to behold after dark.

I snapped this shot through the window of our moving bus. I thought that what appeared to be an office building with pulsating, moving color LED lighting warranted the risk of a little camera shake. The RAW file was grainy, and full of chroma noise, so I've cleaned it up as well as I can. The sky was a color similar to what is shown here, but I had to fake it. I'm no purist.

It would be an interesting project if one had the time and resources to do a photographic night study of Shanghai or any large city in China.

Aged, Roasted And Carved

Daffy, Donald nor Yacky Doodle was ever this tasty!

I stopped by to do a quick voice-over and was invited to have dinner at Commis in Oakland with the production company owner and his production manager and her husband. We were the same quartet that visited China together in 2009, spent a week in Austria in 2008 . . . and we all used to work together at the same TV station. The whole episode was reminiscent of when I used to arrive for work just as the crew would be leaving for lunch. I have a knack for good timing that way.

The way it worked was, when seated we were asked if there were any food allergies or serious dislikes. Having none, we were informed that each course would be brought to us, and the printed menu of what we had eaten would be presented at the end of the meal. In other words, we were booked for a culinary adventure.

This was the menu:
Pacific beach scallops with apple and parsley, sour cream and patty leaf herb;
Goat's milk and honey, candy cap mushrooms with sunchokes and yarrow;
Poached farm egg yolk with smoked dates, alliums with malt vinegar;
Young abalone in a bouillon of its liver with meyer lemon, sprouting lgumes;
Potato with fermented black garlic and escarole leaves with brown butter;
Duck roasted over charcoal on the bone, cabbage leaves and sugar pumpkin;
Rosemary soda with a concord grape sorbet;
Pistachio cake with poached pear, frozen chicory tea with crème fraiche.
I also ordered coffee to go with the dessert.

This isn't a particularly good food shot, but the dinner was outstanding, and all the more because I didn't pay for it!

The duck was delicious, by the way.

The Storm Passes By

But it leaves a reminder here and there.

Storms and clouds are inevitable. Unless you have a dirty windscreen that isn't going to get washed any other way. Then it rains only at night while parked safely away from the weather. C'mon, you stupid clouds! Rain during the day when the car is out!

Morning Sun In Prague

Revisiting a photo with better newer tools.

I recently installed Dr. Russell Brown's Adobe Paper Texture extension in Photoshop (found here: http://www.russellbrown.com/scripts.html) and came away with this treatment that I kind of like. I'll have to go through my archives and see what else I have that might lend itself to a textured treatment. It's something that I like when it's done well.

Some people seem to be able to visualize a textured photo at the time of capture, but I've only had one or two other pictures that I thought really worked well for me. This one: http://goo.gl/0jEc7 and this one: http://goo.gl/K2mGZ.

There is a different version of this photo (http://goo.gl/M5Vz4) in my Ski Holiday 2008 album that I did up with a more cinematic crop and a duotone treatment. The original RAW file has a limited tonality because of the color of the ambient light, atmospheric haze and surface reflections, so the scene lends itself very well to mono- and duo-chromatic toning.

A Warm Autumn Evening
This is my favorite season of the year.

This is a make-up photo for Project52-2012 week 38: Autumn. In the interests of full disclosure, while I did see the moon at about this location, I didn't have my camera with me. By the time I drove one block to my apartment, ran in and grabbed the camera, walked back and got set up, the moon had risen out of the frame. So this is the actual moon at the time this scene was captured, but moved in Photoshop from higher above the horizon.

She Needs No Explanation

If the eyes don't tell you, there's this sign she gives.

Our receptionist Leti is a lot of fun, but she can freeze a miscreant in his tracks with a glance. "Don't mess with me, fool!" is what she seems to say. It's good advice, I tell you!

This is a much belated make-good for Project52-2012 week 34: Portrait.
